4 Weeks to a Fitter You: Start with the Week 1 Step Challenge
Ready to move more, build better habits, and feel stronger? Four Lakes Athletic Club’s 4 Weeks to a Fitter You Challenge is designed to help you make simple, realistic changes that can add up to a stronger, healthier routine.
Each week, we’ll put a new challenge on the Fitness Chalkboard at FLAC, giving you a different way to move, challenge yourself, and stay motivated throughout the month.
And we’re kicking things off with one of the simplest forms of exercise there is:
Week 1: The Step Challenge
Your Goal: 10,000 Steps a Day
Walking is one of the easiest ways to add more movement to your day. You don't need a complicated workout, expensive equipment, or hours of free time. Your steps can happen throughout the day - and they can add up quickly.
For Week 1 of the 4 Weeks to a Fitter You Challenge, your goal is to work toward 10,000 steps each day.
Regular walking can help support cardiovascular health, increase daily activity and energy expenditure, and improve overall endurance and mobility.
The key is simply to keep moving.
Get Your Steps In at FLAC
You don't have to wait for the perfect opportunity to get your steps. Look for small ways to add movement throughout your day - and take advantage of the resources available at Four Lakes Athletic Club.
Walk the Indoor Track
One of the easiest ways to get extra steps at FLAC is right around the fitness floor - the indoor track.
Whether you're warming up before a workout, cooling down afterward, or simply looking for a place to walk, the FLAC indoor track gives you a comfortable, convenient way to keep moving regardless of the weather.
Need a few more steps to reach your goal? Add a few laps before heading home.
12 Laps = 1 Mile
Park a Little Farther Away
It's a small change, but those extra steps count.
Instead of looking for the closest parking spot, park a little farther away and use the walk to and from the club to add movement to your day.
Take the Stairs
Whenever practical, choose the stairs instead of the elevator. It's another simple opportunity to add movement and challenge your body throughout the day.
Walk While You're on the Phone
Have a phone call that doesn't require you to sit at a desk?
Get up and walk.
Around the office. Around your house. Around the club. Wherever it makes sense, turn phone time into movement time.
Use the Cardio Equipment
Looking for another way to increase your activity? Add some walking or step-based cardio to your workout.
The cardio area at FLAC offers several options for increasing your daily movement and building endurance. Even a short session can help you work toward your daily activity goal.
Your 10,000 Steps Don't Have to Happen All at Once
This is one of the most important things to remember during the Week 1 Step Challenge.
You don't need to complete 10,000 steps in one long walk.
Try breaking your goal into smaller chunks throughout the day:
Take a short walk during lunch.
Walk for a few minutes before or after your workout.
Add laps around the FLAC indoor track.
Park farther away from your destination.
Take the stairs.
Walk while talking on the phone.
Take an evening walk with your family.
Add a few extra minutes of movement whenever you have the opportunity.
Those small choices can turn into thousands of additional steps.
Keep Track of Your Progress
There are plenty of easy ways to monitor your daily steps. You may already have everything you need right on your phone or wrist.
Try:
Apple Health / Apple Fitness
Samsung Health
StepsApp
A smartwatch
A fitness tracker
Find the method that works for you and start paying attention to how much you're moving each day.
And don't stop when Week 1 ends.
Once you've started, keep the 10,000-step goal going for the rest of the month.
More Than Just 10,000 Steps
The goal of the 4 Weeks to a Fitter You Challenge isn't perfection. It's participation.
Each week gives you a new opportunity to focus on one aspect of your fitness routine and create habits that can carry beyond the challenge.
After Week 1, we'll move on to the next challenge - so keep an eye on the Fitness Chalkboard at FLAC and follow along throughout the month.
You can participate at your own pace, challenge yourself to improve, and find new ways to make movement a regular part of your lifestyle.
Want a Little More Direction? Work With a Personal Trainer.
Sometimes the hardest part isn't knowing that you should exercise - it's knowing what to do, how much to do, and how to stay consistent.
That's where working with a personal trainer can help.
