Beyond the Ball & Racquet: The Tools You Need to Take to the Court

A great tennis match starts with more than a ball and a racquet.

Whether you’re stepping onto the court for the first time, returning after a break, or playing competitive tennis every week, having the right gear and the right mindset can make a noticeable difference in your comfort, performance, and enjoyment.

At Four Lakes Athletic Club, we know that preparation is part of the game. Before you head onto one of our six indoor tennis courts make sure your tennis bag is stocked with the essentials.

1. Proper Tennis Shoes

Your feet do a lot of work on the tennis court.

Tennis involves constant starts, stops, lateral movement, quick changes of direction, and explosive pushes toward the ball. That means your footwear matters.

A dedicated pair of tennis shoes provides the support, stability, and court-appropriate traction you need to move confidently. Running shoes are designed primarily for forward motion and aren't necessarily built for the side-to-side movement required in tennis.

Court-ready tip: Keep a designated pair of indoor tennis shoes in your tennis bag so you're always ready to play.

2. Hydration

Don't wait until you're thirsty to reach for your water bottle.

Staying hydrated is an important part of maintaining energy and focus throughout your tennis session. Whether you're playing a quick practice session, taking a private lesson, participating in a league, or competing in a tournament, bring water with you and make hydration part of your routine.

Court-ready tip: Fill your bottle before you leave for the club, or stop at our water fountain, so you don't arrive at the court without something to say hydrated.

3. Your Tennis Bag

Your tennis bag is your mobile command center.

Beyond carrying your racquets, a good tennis bag gives you a place to keep the things you'll want before, during, and after your time on the court.

Consider packing:

  • Extra tennis balls

  • An extra racquet or backup grip

  • Water bottle

  • Towel

  • Extra shirt or change of clothes

  • Tennis shoes

  • Athletic tape or other personal essentials

  • Small snacks for longer sessions

Keeping your essentials together means less scrambling and more time focused on your game.

4. Appropriate Tennis Attire

Comfort matters when you're moving around the court.

Choose athletic clothing that allows you to move freely through your full range of motion. Breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics can help keep you comfortable during longer practices and matches.

And don't forget about pockets! Tennis players know the importance of having a convenient place to carry a ball when serving.

Court-ready tip: Pack an extra change of clothes for longer sessions, leagues, or tournament days.

5. A Towel

It may seem simple, but a towel belongs in every tennis bag.

A towel can help you stay comfortable during an intense workout or long match and is especially useful during competitive play when you're spending extended time on the court.

It's one of those small essentials you'll be glad you packed. Forget yours? No problem! We have towels available at the front desk, just ask!

6. The Right Mindset

Perhaps the most important thing you can bring to the court can't be purchased.

Bring patience. Bring focus. Bring a willingness to learn.

Tennis is a game of constant adjustment. You're going to hit great shots - and you're going to hit some that you'd rather forget. The key is learning from every point and continuing to improve.

Whether you're working on your serve, developing your footwork, learning match strategy, or simply trying to keep the ball in play a little longer, progress comes from showing up and putting in the work.

Take Your Game Beyond the Ball & Racquet

The right equipment won't automatically win the match, but being prepared can help you feel more comfortable, confident, and ready to play.
