From Couch to 5K: Build Your Momentum Before the Four Lakes Athletic Club Turkey Trot!
Your Thanksgiving morning goal starts today! Whether you’re already a regular walker, easing back into a fitness routine, or thinking about tackling your very first 5K, the Four Lakes Athletic Club Turkey Trot is the perfect opportunity to set a goal, get moving, and celebrate the season with our community.
Join us on Thanksgiving Day Morning Thursday, November 26, 2026, for our annual Turkey Trot in Elkhorn, Wisconsin! You don’t have to be a seasoned runner to participate. You just need a starting point, a little consistency, and the goal to keep moving. And if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to begin, consider this your sign!
Your First Step Toward 5K Success Starts Now
Training for a 5K doesn’t have to mean logging miles of running right away. In fact, one of the best ways to prepare is to build a consistent walking routine, improve your endurance, and gradually find a pace that works for you.
The goal? Show up on Thanksgiving morning feeling confident, prepared, and proud of the work you’ve put in.
Here are a few ways to get started:
1. Start with daily movement. Walking is an excellent foundation for 5K training. Begin with manageable walks, increase your time gradually, and focus on building a routine you can maintain.
2. Find your pace. You don’t need to sprint to make progress. Experiment with a comfortable, sustainable walking pace. As your endurance improves, try short intervals of brisk walking or light jogging if that fits your goals.
3. Make consistency your priority. A few shorter walks throughout the day can help you build toward longer sessions. The key is creating a habit that carries you through the next several weeks.
4. Give yourself time to improve. Every walk counts. Celebrate your progress, listen to your body, and remember that showing up consistently is a win all on its own.
5. Make it fun! Invite a friend, bring a family member, or use the Turkey Trot as motivation to get outside and enjoy the fall weather. Having a goal on the calendar can make it easier to stay accountable.
Week 1 of 4 Weeks to a Fitter You: Let's Get Moving!
If you’re participating in our 4 Weeks to a Fitter You Challenge, you already have the perfect starting point for your Turkey Trot training!
Week one’s challenge was all about one simple goal: 10,000 steps a day.
Every step helps you build momentum, establish a comfortable pace, and create the consistency you’ll need as Thanksgiving approaches.
Here’s how to make those steps count:
Break it up. You don’t need to complete all 10,000 steps at once. Take a morning walk, move during your lunch break, and add an evening stroll to reach your goal.
Track your progress. Use Apple Health, Samsung Health, StepsApp, or another step-tracking tool to see how your daily movement adds up.
Build your endurance. As your daily walks become more comfortable, try extending one walk or incorporating a few brisk intervals.
Stay consistent. Focus on making movement part of your everyday routine rather than trying to do everything at once.
Keep your eyes on Thanksgiving. Every day you move is another opportunity to build confidence before the Turkey Trot.
And remember, your 10,000 steps don’t have to happen on a treadmill. Walk the neighborhood, take the stairs, squeeze in a few extra laps around the gym, or enjoy the beautiful fall scenery around Southeastern Wisconsin.
Your challenge is more than a step count. It’s the beginning of a habit that can carry you well beyond Thanksgiving.
Turn Your Daily Steps Into a Thanksgiving Goal
Think about how much can change between now and November 26 when you commit to moving a little more each day.
You could start by walking for 10–15 minutes at a time, gradually increase your distance, and work toward completing the full 5K at a comfortable pace. If you already walk regularly, challenge yourself to improve your consistency or add a little distance to your usual route.
And if you’re not sure where to begin, Four Lakes Athletic Club is here to help you take that next step. Our fitness facilities offer opportunities to build endurance, stay active, and establish a routine that supports your goals.
You don’t need to be the fastest person at the starting line. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to start.
Whether your goal is to walk the entire course, jog part of the way, improve your fitness, or simply enjoy a Thanksgiving morning tradition with friends and family, the Turkey Trot gives you something exciting to work toward.
