Compounding Workouts: Small Habits, Bigger Results

What if getting fitter didn’t mean completely overhauling your routine every week?

That’s the idea behind compounding workouts.

Instead of starting from scratch each time you add a new fitness goal, you keep the habits you’ve already built and layer something new on top. One small effort becomes two. Two become three. Over time, those consistent efforts can add up to bigger improvements in strength, endurance, movement, and confidence.

That’s exactly what we’re doing with the 4 Weeks to a Fitter You Challenge at Four Lakes Athletic Club.

Week 1: Keep Those Steps Going

Week 1 challenged you to work toward 10,000 steps a day.

If you’re still working your way toward that number, keep going. If you’ve already reached it, don’t stop just because Week 2 has arrived.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to keep moving throughout your day. More steps can help support cardiovascular endurance, lower-body endurance, daily calorie expenditure, and overall activity levels.

Your Week 1 habit is now part of your routine.

Keep it going.

Week 2: Add the Plank

Now we’re adding a new challenge: planks.

The goal is three 30-second planks each day - 30 seconds of work, 30 seconds of rest, repeated for three sets.

Planks may look simple, but they challenge your core while encouraging you to stabilize your body and maintain strong positioning. A stronger core can support better stability, balance and functional movement during workouts and everyday activities.

And you don't have to choose between steps and planks.

Do both.

That’s the power of compounding workouts.

Why Compound Your Workouts?

The goal isn't necessarily to make every workout longer or harder.

It’s to make your efforts work together.

Your daily steps keep you moving and build endurance. Your planks add core strength and stability. As the weeks continue, new habits can build on the foundation you’ve already created.

Think:

Move more.
Get stronger.
Build consistency.
Repeat.

Small efforts may not feel dramatic in the moment, but consistently stacking positive habits can create meaningful progress over time.

Make Your Workouts Work Smarter

Compounding workouts also give you flexibility.

You could get your steps by walking the indoor track, taking the stairs, parking farther away, or simply finding more opportunities to move throughout the day.

Your planks can happen at the gym, at home, or almost anywhere you have a little floor space.

The important part isn't making every workout exact.

It's keeping the momentum going.

Want More Guidance? Work With a Trainer.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't knowing that you should exercise - it's knowing what to do, how much to do, and how to progress.

Working with a personal trainer can help you turn individual exercises into a purposeful fitness plan. A trainer can help with technique, modifications, progression, accountability and making sure your workouts match your goals.
